Richard Leonard Brooks, age 95, passed away quietly on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at South Austin’s St. David’s Hospital. He is survived by daughters, Susan Vinklarek and Rebecca Brooks, and by grandson Chris Vinklarek and son-in-law Larry Vinklarek. He was married to his wife Frances, who passed away in 2003, for 62 years.
The youngest of four children, he was born in Phenix City, Alabama on July 8, 1916. From an early age he showed an enterprising spirit that would see him own a barber shop at age 15, along with numerous other jobs throughout his long life including butcher, grocery store owner and real estate salesman. But the job that suited him best was as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force.
He began his military career by joining the Army in 1945 where he was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1948 he joined the Air Force and was stationed at numerous postings including Alaska, Newfoundland, Tripoli and England. He was cited numerous times by his commanding officers for his dedication, knowledge and cooperative spirit. He received an Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service in June 1960. The award notes his “leadership, exemplary foresight, and ceaseless effort resulted in significant contributions to the effectiveness and success of the Combat Defense Program. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Brooks culminate a distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.” He retired from the Air Force in July, 1962.
He was a lover of Zane Grey westerns, football, golf, tennis and boxing. He enjoyed good food, movies and the company of friends like Ray Lott, Roy Blackburn, and Willie Rhodes. He was a good friend, a wonderful husband and a great dad. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 West William Cannon Dr.
