Renate Freid, 80, died on February 7, 2024, in Austin, Texas surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 13, 1943 in Halle/Saale, Germany. She was a 1961 Far Rockaway High School graduate in New York. Renate was the daughter of the late Herta and Will Hiller. She was predeceased by her husband, Moe Freid, of almost 55 years. Renate is survived by her son, Jim Freid (Wendy Reich) and daughter, Suzanne Freid (Don Carper) of Austin, Texas. She had seven beautiful grandchildren: Billy, Eleanor, Ava, Drew, Lillian,Derek, and Josephine, all of whom she adored. She is also survived by her brother, Wolfgang Hiller (Karen) of Glen Head, New York, her sister-in-law Gail Jurist (Dave), and sister-in-law, Diana Freid (Jon). Renate leaves behind many nieces, nephews, beloved friends, and her 14 year old white lab, Mabel, whom she considered her "Golden Girls Companion”.
Renate came to the United States in 1953, settling in the Far Rockaway, New York area with her parents and brother. In 1963 she married the love of her life, Moe Freid, whom she met at her first job as a secretary in a law office. After moving from East Meadow, New York, she and her family settled in Manchaca, Texas in 1974. Renate's first job in Texas was in the mailroom of the IRS building where she made the first of many lasting friendships spanning decades. She was briefly with Jim Pearson Automotive, before she embarked on a joint venture with her husband, Moe. Together they became successful entrepreneurs, starting One Moe Tile and Marble, a marble and granite import company that supported their growing business, Moe Freid Marble and Granite. Renate was a tough businesswoman during her career, abandoning al filters on her thoughts and feelings and "telling it like it is”.
Renate was a spirited woman who was fiercely loyal to those she loved. She always found time to enjoy a few days in Las Vegas several times a year at her beloved Bally's Casino. She had lifelong friends, who provided her joy in the small things like Bingo and Bunko, and having them visit at their ranch in Lytton Springs. Many people may not know that she was extremely generous over the years to many organizations that included veterans, animal rescue, and St. Jude's. She once crocheted almost 50 blankets that she donated to the children of Helping Hand Home. Her feisty personality will be greatly missed by all. We know that Moe is happy to have her and her "honey do lists" back with him.
The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the many people who stood by them over the last few weeks of Renate's life: To Greg Garcia who visited Renate multiple times, bringing with him Charlie the Bear who traveled with her on her final journey and kept her peaceful... To the dedicated Doctors and Nursing staff and Dr. Tyler Jorgensen at Seton Medical for kindness and compassion during her final stay at Seton. To Hospice Austin, Nina Harrison and Patricia Smith, Brookdale's Skilled Nursing staff, whose gentle and compassionate care continued to her time of her passing... a special thank you to Ben at Brookdale and the sincere and caring moments that Jackie, her roommate and Carol, a resident at Brookdale Skilled Nursing, provided in the final hours of Renate's life...and to others who assisted in her care. Your love and support were invaluable. We are forever grateful.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 17th, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas 78731, with Rev. Lonnie Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice Austin.
