Author/Poet/Activist, raul r. salinas passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2008 after a long struggle with liver cancer. An internationally recognized literary poet, Salinas was born March 17, 1934 in San Antonio, Texas and spent the early years of his youth in Austin. After a turbulent period spent in prison, Salinas returned to his hometown to open Resistencia Bookstore and become a mentor and activist in the literary and political arenas. He was vocal champion of many social causes ranging from farm worker's rights, to the Native American movement of the 1970s. A published author, Salinas' writings served as an inspiration to people across the nation. Salinas was preceded in death by his mother, Frances R. Hill. He is survived by his loving wife, Elida Salinas; his children, Richard Salinas of Austin, Eleanor Salinas and Lawrence Salinas both of California; stepchildren, Mary Malagon, Judy Castillo, Deborah Riojas, and Chris Del Rio all of Austin. Mr. Salinas had three grandchildren in California, Amber, Lance and Alexis Salinas; twenty-two grandchildren who live in the greater Austin area; nephew, David LaRocca of Austin; and niece, Jessica Gist of Kyle. His family wishes to convey their deep appreciation for the outpouring of well wishes and sympathy from people in the Austin community and across the country. Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 pm on Friday, February 15, 2008 at Wilke-Clay-Fish. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Wilke-Clay-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
