Randy was born in Houston, Texas, December 24, 1951, to Earl Curtis Hankamer, Jr. and Geraldine A. Brown. He attended The Kinkaid School in Houston, class of 1970 and Stanford University, class of 1974. Randy received a Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture in 1980, and a Master of Business Administration at The University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business, Executive MBA Program in 1995.
Randy was a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Austinplan Land Use Task Group and received Merits Awards and the "Outstanding Contributor to Planning" Award from the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association.
Until his illness, he was a board member of the Old West Austin Neighborhood Association and a former board member of the Heritage Society of Austin.
During his time at The Kinkaid School, Randy was a well-liked and active member of the school. His record of 302 yards rushed in a single game against St. John's still stands, untested, at Kinkaid today. While at Stanford, he spent a year living in Tours, France, enjoying traveling through Europe, especially in France and Spain.
Randy's main loves were family, football, foreign adventure, music, and Bluebell peach ice cream. He was a compassionate, caring man who believed in humanity and loved all people equally. His efforts in environmental and historical preservation will continue to benefit Austin, all of Texas, and California for generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis, his mother, Jerry, and his stepmother, Doris. He is survived by his wife, Joanne, and their daughters, Kelly and Cheryl; his sister, Katherine Norris and her husband, Jan, and their children, Anne, Vivian, and Jeff; his brother, Earl and wife, Bettie, and their daughters Karen, Joanna, and Heather; and his brother, Doug.
We are forever thankful for the staff of MD Anderson and at Seton Hospital for their love and care of Randy over these past five and a half years.
A formal visitation will be held on Saturday, October 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Weed-Corley-Fish. Private burial is to follow at Oakwood Cemetery Annex on a separate date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to MD Anderson, Seton Hospital, the Austin History Center, or the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. We also ask anyone who can to donate blood or platelets in his honor.
