Pinkney Richard "Butch" Jarrett passed away at home with his wife at his side on February 11, after a 3 and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Newton, North Carolina on January 13, 1945, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Howard Jarrett, Sr. He married Nancy Shields, on August 6, 1967. Richard was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, their daughters Kathryn Elizabeth and her fiancé Keith Sutherland of Connecticut, Victoria Jarrett Davis, her husband Brad, and their daughter Frances "Frankie" Evelyn of Flower Mound, TX. He is also survived by his sisters, Sara "Sissy" Leonard of Charlotte, NC, Elizabeth "Izzie" Holshouser of Newton, NC, Martha "Marcie" Martin of Aurora, IL, and Mary Frances "Kitty" Adair of Hickory, NC, his brother Cecil Howard "Sonny" Jarrett, Jr.of Columbia, SC, and his 96 year old mother of Newton, NC. Other survivors include 18 nieces and nephews. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. His work in electrical sales management took the family from North Carolina to Texas to Louisiana and finally to Austin in 1987. While in Austin, he worked for Eagle Signal Controls, and Reed Elsevier. Richard enjoyed boating on Lake Travis, fishing on the coast, hunting and making new friends at Capitol City Trap and Skeet Club. He also enjoyed reading about history and science, writing poetry, listening to music and collecting albums. His favorite pastime was playing with his granddaughter. He thoroughly enjoyed taking your money at a friendly game of Texas Hold'em. Many days were spent sitting in the front yard, chatting with friends and neighbors about anything and everything. He knew at least something about everything. If he did not know, he might make something up, or he would pull out a volume of his 1983 World Book Encyclopedias to figure it out. After learning that the vast majority of pancreatic cancer patients have little time, Richard faced his diagnosis with focused determination, vigorous walks through the neighborhood, an excellent sense of humor, and numerous fishing trips to the coast that he scheduled to coincide with his clinical trials at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Richard served as an Elder at Sherwood Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge, LA., and was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Austin. It was Richard's wish that he be cremated. Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, February 15 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. The family expresses their gratitude to Dr. Jess Thompson, Dr. Michael Kaspar, Bobbie Moles, R.N., and Lisa Sailer, P.A. for their excellent care. Special thanks to his Pharmacists Sally Loomer and Mufad Najjar, and also to Barbara Gerace, RN from Hospice Austin for their kind and professional service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd., Austin, Texas 78759 or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), 2221 Rosecrans Ave., Ste. 7000, El Segundo, California 90245.
