PEGGY MATTHEWS ELLIOTT Peggy Matthews Elliott, formerly of Sonora, Texas, passed away on July 3, 2003, in Austin, Texas. Born on March 3, 1928, she was 75. Her father, Carl Matthews, her mother, Emma Matthews, and three brothers, Charles, Harry and Carl, Jr., preceded her in death. Known to her childhood and college friends as Sarah Peggy Jean, Peggy grew up in Livingston, Texas, graduated from Livingston High School in 1945, and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where, in January of 1950, she received her degree in education, with a major in home economics and a minor in science. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Shortly after her graduation, she accepted a teaching job with the Sonora Independent School District, and moved to Sonora to begin her career teaching high school home economics and, later, junior high science. Not long after her move to Sonora, she met Web Elliott, and they were married on July 19, 1951. They moved to Austin full time in 1994. Peggy was very active in her community and church, and supported a number of charitable organizations. She remained a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sonora until her death. She had a kind and generous heart and welcomed everyone into her home. She took great pride and joy in seeing the achievements of her students and former students, teaching in the Sonora public schools for 16 years. While education was the path of her professional career, she was a devoted wife and mother, a wonderful homemaker, and a passionate gardener. One of her greatest joys in life came from sharing her homegrown fruits and vegetables with her friends and neighbors. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many, many friends. Peggy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Web Elliott, her daughter, Emily Elliott, a son, John Elliott, his wife, Ellen, and two grandsons, Web and Patrick, all of Austin. A memorial service for Peggy will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd., Austin, Texas 78703. Honorary pallbearers will be James N. Owen, Jr., of Livingston, Texas, Smith Neal, of Sonora, Texas, and her two grandsons, Web and Patrick Elliott, both of Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Peggys name to a favorite charity. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas 78705 452-8811.
