Norbert, better known by his nickname, BB, was born in Austin, Texas to parents Norberto Sr. and Margarita Hernandez, on February 16, 1957; he was the 2nd of 5 children. A lifelong Austinite, he graduated from Reagan High School and started his career in kitchen service at the Villa Capris restaurant downtown. When they closed, he immediately went to work at the University of Texas Faculty Center and retired after 27 years of service.
BB was a big kid at heart. Sometimes chatty and friendly, he would share his passion for fishing and building, repairing, or restoring bicycles. He could be very resourceful when it came to mechanical things. As a younger man, he enjoyed riding his bike on the greenbelt or exploring the streets of downtown. BB was also a movie aficionado. For years he looked forward to going to the local theater on weekends and later collecting movies. Often his enthusiasm for movies was so great, he’d get carried away when sharing something new, and was prone to telling spoilers. He made several road trips across the US with his family and enjoyed going abroad to places like the UK, Spain, Portugal and France. BB was loyal to his family and always willing to help with house projects, even taking part in building his own home. A fixture in the neighborhood, neighbors would often see him riding his bike to the store or walking to the local food truck. He loved Mexican food (good food period). But more than anything, he loved his pets, cats and dogs both. BB is a good soul who will be dearly & forever missed by his family.
He is survived by his parents, Norberto & Margarita Hernandez; brothers, James, Paul and wife Martha Castillo Hernandez, Dennis and wife Monica Galvan Hernandez; sister, Raquel Hernandez; 1 niece, 4 nephews, 4 great nieces & 3 great nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Pedro & Cecelia (Alfaro) Velasquez of San Antonio, Texas and paternal grandparents Enrique Sr. and Theodora (Gutierrez) Hernandez of Lockhart, Texas.
