Nicholas Valdez peacefully departed on August 27th, 2023, at the age of 91. His legacy lives on through his significant contributions to music, unwavering patriotism, and his boundless love for both his family and his country.
Born on December 14, 1931, Nicholas Valdez grew up in a close-knit family in Kingsville Texas, surrounded by the love of his parents, brothers, and sister. His early passion for music was evident, and it was clear that he possessed a remarkable talent for the trumpet. From a young age, he embraced the power of music to express emotions and connect with others.
As a young man, Nicholas Valdez answered the call of duty, enlisting in the United States Army and serving his country with great pride during the Korean War. It was during this period that he had the privilege of being a member of the Army band. One of his most cherished memories in his life was when he proudly wore his Army uniform, standing with his fellow bandmates as they performed for servicemen, senators, congressmen, foreign dignitaries, and even presidents.
In addition to his military service, Nicholas Valdez held a profound affection for his family. He treasured the close connection he had with his parents, siblings, and particularly his twin brother, Espiridion Valdez (SP). His love and unwavering support were evident, and he took great pride in celebrating the achievements and significant moments of his loved ones.
Apart from his love for music and family, Nicholas Valdez held a unique fondness for baseball, and he had a special affinity for the New York Yankees as his team of choice. He enthusiastically embraced the thrill of the game, wholeheartedly cheering for his beloved Yankees.
As we say our final farewell to Nicholas Valdez, let us remember the beautiful music he shared with the world, the sacrifices he made for his country, and the love he showered upon his family. His spirit will continue to inspire us all, and his memory will be cherished for generations to come.
Rest in peace, dear Uncle Nick!!! You will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and your big band music will play on eternally.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas in the spring of 2024.
