Wanting to join the fight for her country during World War II, June's mother allowed her to enlist in the military at the age of 20. She served in the Women's Army Corp as a medical technician for two years. During her service, she was stationed at Madigan General Hospital, Dibble Medical Hospital, and in March Field, California. It was at March Field that June met Ron Schoonover.
June and Ron were married on September 2, 1946. Through their nearly 70 years together, they traveled around the world to Japan, Germany, England, Australia, Okinawa, and numerous cities across the United States. Along the way, June gave birth to their five children: Cynthia Barrientes, Marilyn Tackett, Celia Schoonover, Robert Schoonover, and Thomas Schoonover.
Throughout her life, June was highly involved in social work as a leader of community service at Austin First Seventh Day Adventist Church. She served thousands of people in need for over 20 years, retiring from her position at age 86. June had a heart for service and for the church.
June is survived by her husband Ron Schoonover; four of her children: Cindy, Celia, Robert, and Thomas; eight grandchildren: Ronnie Carden, Richard Tackett, Angela Tackett, Stephen Larsen, Courtney Chavez, Jonathan Barrientes, Aaron Schoonover, and Ethan Schoonover; and three great grandchildren: Cameron Tackett, Tyler Carden, and Elena Chavez.
June is predeceased by her daughter Marilyn Tackett and her granddaughter Lauren Emily Schoonover.
June's family will miss her dearly. Her spirit will remain with us at every family gathering and in our thoughts always.
