Velma Mitchell, 93, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013. She was born on February 28, 1920 in Sealy, Texas. As a young child she moved to Granger, Texas and lived in the house on the hill. Her sense of style and love of fashion earned her the family nickname "Aunt Cute". In 1929, Velma moved to Austin where she attended Anderson High School and Tillotson College. She married Morris Earls and had two lovely daughters, Mary Lillian and Delores. Later in life she married Reverend Arthur Lee Mitchell. She entered the nursing profession at Brackenridge Hospital. She was the school nurse for Gary Job Corps in San Marcos and ended her career as a county visiting nurse with Girling Health Care. Velma came to Christ at an early age and was very involved in her church memberships at Nineteenth Street Baptist Church and David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She sang in the choir and held various positions, including President of Mission II. As a member of Mission II she loved traveling to the annual the National Baptist Convention. She cherished her community service as a member of Delta Friends, the sorority for the mothers of Delta Sigma Theta sorors. Velma also loved entertaining in her home, hosting many events, including bridal and baby showers, dinner parties, teas and the wedding and reception of a beloved niece. She also loved planning and attending the annual Jackson Family Reunions. Velma was preceded in death by her late husband Reverend Mitchell and daughter Mary Lillian Earls Banks. She is survived by her brother Jay W. Roberson and his wife Daisy; her daughter Delores Earls Whitlock; granddaughter Melanie Clark and her husband Mike; granddaughter Michelle Banks ; great-grandchildren Dewayne Bryant, Ty Clark and Reece Clark; and host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and life-long friends.
