Joan was born in Springfield, Missouri, to John and Rita Morgan. She graduated from Central Senior High School in Springfield in 1955 and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Southwest Missouri State University in 1960. She also obtained a degree in Cartography. She was a devoted mother to her daughter Diann and son Lee. She was a teacher in Lebanon, Missouri area public school systems and served in the elected office of County Superintendent of schools. She then served as a cartographer at the U.S. Geological Survey drawing topographical maps both by hand and with CAD software. She retired in 2004 and moved to Austin to live near her children.
Joan enjoyed using her artistic talents to create beautiful things with her family and friends. She made many quilts with her mother that will be passed down for generations. She was especially talented in watercolor and oil painting. She enjoyed travelling to scenic locations with her sister Sue and Sue’s husband Jim. Sue was also an accomplished artist and together they acquired inspiration for their prolific paintings. In Austin she enjoyed family events, being a grandmother, swimming, going out with friends and caring for her sweet, “little brown dog”, Bethy, that her grandson Michael had selected for her.
Joan was preceded in passing by her father John, mother Rita, and sisters Margaret and Sue. Joan is survived by her sister June, brother John(Lynn), brother-in laws Bob and Jim, daughter Diann (Stephen), son Lee (Sheila), grandchildren Jennifer, Roy, Michael (Alyssa), and great-grandson Luca.
