He was born October 1, 1939, in Austin, Texas to Milam Shelton Johnson Sr. and Albertine Koenneke Johnson.
As a young boy, Milam found his love for the outdoors and sports early on. He enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting with his father in Llano County and later in life looked forward to his annual pheasant hunt with his lifelong friends. His most loved sport was baseball and he remained friends with many teammates throughout his life including his famous Colt League team who represented Texas in the world series at Comiskey Park in 1956. He graduated from Austin High School in 1957, where he played baseball for the Maroons. After graduating, he attended The University of Texas and played baseball his freshman year as well as many intramural sports. While attending The University, he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated in 1961 with a B.B.A. degree and entered The United States Army stationed at Ft. Hood. Upon completion of serving his country in the Army, he began his banking career with Texas Commerce Bank and was promoted to Executive Vice President and Manager of Investment Management. Milam would go on to work for the American Bank of Commerce and Chase Bank, as well. Upon retirement, Milam had 42 years in the banking industry.
On March 31, 1967, he married the love of his life, Judy Ellard of Austin, and raised three daughters. Throughout Milam and Judy’s 55 years of marriage, his love, devotion, and commitment to his wife and daughters were and will always be his greatest achievement in his life.
Milam loved donating his time to serving others within the Austin community. He continued his affiliation with banking during his retirement by serving as an American Bank of Commerce advisory director. He served as Treasurer for the Rob Roy Homeowners Association as well as a board member for the North Austin MUD.
His happiest times were spent with family and friends. Everyone Milam knew will cherish his impact on their lives, either through love, friendship, mentorship, or his humor. He enjoyed watching his grandson’s sporting events and would often travel up and back to Tuscola, Tx in a single evening to watch a game and cheer on the boys. He had many fond memories of spending time with his family at his parent’s river place in Wimberley, TX. and visiting his father-in-law in the Colorado mountains. His contagious smile, humor, abundant love and his trademark warm greeting of “Hello, Hello” will dearly be missed by all that knew and loved him.
Milam is preceded in death by his father Milam Shelton Johnson Sr. and his mother Albertine Koenekke Johnson. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Watson of Katy, Tx., his wife Judy Johnson of Austin, daughter Amy Milam, and her husband John Milam of Tuscola, daughter Jennifer Johnson of Austin, Stepdaughter Kim Rylander of Abilene, his grandchildren Tanner Milam, Miles Moore, and Matthew Moore and many nephews and nieces.
