Michael John Slater, a loving father of two sons, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 20th, 2023, in Austin, TX. He was a devoted father and a cherished friend to many across the East Coast, Midwest, and Texas. Family and friends remember his love of music, singing, and his beautiful tenor voice; his love of dance that led him twice to become the national junior ballroom dance champion as a teenager; and his love of world travel.
Born on December 24, 1959, in New Haven, CT, Mike was the youngest of five children. He spent his childhood in West Haven, CT, and went on to pursue a degree in Chemistry at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1981. Later, he earned an MBA at Pace University. Mike dedicated the majority of his professional life to health insurance sales, working in Chicago, IL and Connecticut. He raised his children in Connecticut before retiring to Oakland Park, FL; and eventually settling in Austin, TX.
In 1991, Mike married and became fully devoted to his children and extended family. Known for his kindness and generosity, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to make someone's day a little brighter. He was an eternal optimist, despite the many challenges he faced throughout his 63 years on this earth.
Mike is survived by his sons, Todd Slater (CT) and Jeremy Slater (TX); his sisters Linda Slater (CT) and Mary Levine (CT and FL); his brother Howard II (CA); nieces Dawn Brill, Robin Haggerty, Patricia Morin, Finessa Lee, and Filicia Page (CT); nieces Amanda Slater and Cheryl Medrano (CA); nephews Walter (RI) and Howard III (CA); and his former wife, Tammy Forner (CT). He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Sophie Slater (CT), and sister Diane Slater (CT).
Mike’s death is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him, as well as those who were yet to cross his path. He lived by the mantra of "constant gradual improvement," and as we mourn his passing, we strive to carry on his legacy by making the world a better place, just as he did.
Michael Slater's memorial will be Friday, July 28th at 9:30AM at Bradley Point Park on Captain Thomas Blvd, West Haven, CT.
Please be aware that parking at the park is $5.00 an hour. There are signs to text and pay via credit card only.
