Michael Shannon Ewing, known as Mike to his family and friends, passed away on January 18, 2025, in Austin, Texas. He was 55 years old. Born on October 17, 1969, in Cleveland, Ohio, Mike was the son of Frank Irwin Ewing and Colleen Ewing (Shannon), both of whom preceded him in death. He spent his early years in Cleveland, later moving to Texas, and finally calling Austin his home.
Mike was a graduate of Solon High School, Wesleyan University, and the University of Houston Law School. He spent much of his professional life working as a lawyer with the Employees Retirement System of Texas, where his intellect, dedication, and unique perspective were genuinely valued.
Most of Mike’s 16 years at ERS were spent supporting Government Relations, where he had a great love for the legislative process. For the last several years, he oversaw tracking legislation that impacted ERS and its members. Mike was an invaluable resource for the ERS Legislative Analysis Group where he led training sessions and LAG meetings, and those privileged to be present or work alongside him got to see Mike doing something he was truly passionate about.
In 2015, Mike made a memorable appearance as a contestant on Jeopardy, showcasing his sharp mind and quick wit, which were trademarks throughout his life. He had a thirst for knowledge and an irrepressible curiosity, whether he was challenging friends to trivia at local Geeks Who Drink events or indulging in a lively debate over a meal and a beverage.
Mike had a dry, sardonic sense of humor, and he was deeply loyal to his Cleveland roots, though he also forged a profound love for his adopted Texas home. He was an avid fan of Austin FC soccer, UT football, and F1 racing. His appreciation for a good book, comic, or graphic novel was matched only by his love for Austin’s barbecue scene and live music culture.
Above all, what mattered most to Mike was time spent with those he cared about—his family, friends, and loved ones. He enjoyed nothing more than engaging in thoughtful conversation, sharing facts and stories, and growing through the exchange of ideas. He is survived by his sister, Anne Cole (Chris) of Shaker Heights, Ohio, as well as his nieces, Roxy and Meg.
A memorial service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held on February 1, 2025, at noon at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, located at 2620 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704. A reception will immediately follow the service at St. Elmo Brewing Company at 440 E. St Elmo Rd where friends and family are invited to share memories, laughter, and stories in Mike's honor.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to two organizations that support causes that were dear to Mike: the 4TX Foundation, a group affiliated with Austin FC that uses the power of soccer to help the local Austin community thrive; or Good Work Austin, an organization that partners with food workers and many of Mike’s favorite local businesses to shape an industry where employees are valued.
