She married Raymond Kirkland, on August 8, 1938 and they had four daughters. Mavis and Raymond were married for 66 years. Mavis “Mema” loved her family and cherished her photos, which spread throughout her home, to include a gathering of 13 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchildren. Because of her love for people and conversation, it was a natural draw for Mema’s life calling to be a beautician for 50 years. Mavis’ Beauty Nook nurtured a lot of hearts and sent women, and men, home with a new look and a smile on their face.
Mavis will be forever remembered as a devoted Christian; an active member in her church; authentic in her way of being fashionable and stunning, even at 85 years old; a friend to many; a great sense of humor; and by her cards, sent out for EVERY occasion.
Mavis is survived by her daughter, Doris Sutton of Hobbs, NM, daughter Peggy and husband Doyle Chandler, of Snyder, TX, and daughter Sarah and husband Skip Sibert of Manchaca, TX.
Preceding her in death is her husband, Raymond Kirkland; a daughter, Joyce Hill; and a granddaughter, Kathy Hill.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, March 3, 2011 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Brother Henry Swofford of Living Faith Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
