Mary Kathryn Kaminski was born on August 9, 1935, in Standard Shaft, a small coal mining town in Western Pennsylvania. The daughter of the late John and Julia Opiela Kaminski, she was one of nine children (3 boys and 6 girls). Her mother died from complications during childbirth with her youngest sister, so she was raised by her coal miner father and her oldest sister. She was a member of Transfiguration R.C. Polish Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, PA where she attended parochial school. She graduated from Hurst High School in Norvelt, PA. She was accepted to and graduated from Westmoreland School of Nursing where she served as President of her class. Upon graduating she worked at Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Pennsylvania and at Lake County Hospital in Painesville, Ohio.
Mary met her future husband, Richard Urbanowski, while they were in high school. They were married in a traditional Polish wedding after Dick graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology. They were married for over 65 years. His career took them to Painesville, OH; Houston, TX; Naperville, IL; Dunwoody, GA; and back to Concord, OH. They raised a family of 7 children - 6 boys and 1 girl - and made many lifelong friends along the way. Upon Richard’s retirement, they moved to Barton Creek in Austin Texas.
While living in the Cleveland area, Mary became involved in a national non-profit, “The Christ Child Society.” Mary served as President of the Christ Child Society Western Reserve Chapter. In 2000 they moved to Austin, TX where she was a founding member of The Christ Child Society of Texas, Capital Area Chapter. Nationwide, all of the Christ Child Society’s 47 Chapters have a common service project of providing to mothers of newborns in need. The Capital Area Chapter members also provide bereavement gowns and hygiene packets for disadvantaged elementary students and homeless middle and high school students. Mary volunteered with Christ Child for over 20 years.
Mary and Richard were very involved in their church, St John Neumann Catholic Church. Mary served on the Newcomers Group, The Mary & Martha Guild, on 2 Bereavement Committees, and was a participant in the ChRHP (Christ Renews His Parish) group.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Urbanowski; her brothers John Kaminski and his wife Yolada, Tom Kaminski and his wife Kathryn, and Stanley Kaminski and his wife Dolores; Her sisters Viola Kaminski, Helen Kaminski, Julie (Kaminski) King and her husband Raymond King Jr. and her brother-in-law Joseph Taylor.
Mary is survived by her sister Dorothy (Kaminski) Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, PA. Mary and Richard were blessed with seven very successful children, sixteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren: Richard Alan and Elizabeth (Santone) and their children Rachel Hedges and her husband Austin, and Ricky of Shreveport, LA; LeeAnn (Urbanowski) and Terry Winkler, their daughter Shannon Cizdziel and her husband Mark and children Emma & Luke of Dallas, TX; Robert and Tonda (Dennis) and their children Candace Urbanowski and Zach Angelle and their son Dawson of Aubrey, TX, Kara Wolfe and her husband Jake and their children Rhett & Ripp of Waller, TX, Brettain of Euless, TX, Cassi Countryman and her husband Colton and their daughter Riley of Waxahachie, TX, Spencer of Houston, TX, and Madison of Ft. Worth, TX; Paul of Marietta, GA; Mark and Elizabeth (Butler) and their children Kate, Haley and Logan of Westfield, IN; Thomas and Victoria (Aurelio) and their children Nathan Wilson of Atlanta, GA, Alyssa of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and William of Kingwood, TX; and Geoffrey and Ivana (Jeremic) and their daughter Sara of Concord, OH. The Universities of Texas A&M, Baylor, Auburn, and John Carrol are proudly represented.
Mary will be remembered for her warm heart, Polish cooking, unwavering love and friendships, and her commitment to God, her family, and her community. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A Catholic Funeral Mass and Inurnment will be held on June 14, 2024, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 5455 Bee Cave Rd., Austin, TX, 78746. A Rosary will be said at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. and Inurnment at noon. A reception will follow.
The family would like to thank the owners and staff of Teresa’s House Assisted Living & Memory Care - Craig Ranch for the wonderful care and support they gave to both Mary & Richard in the last phase of their lives.
