She graduated from Danville High School in Arkansas in 1940. Mary was a WAC and served as an Army recruiter during World War II. During this time, she went to nursing school, then married Walter Scott Murphy on June 7, 1944. They gave birth to and raised two children, Nancy and Michael.
Mary spent 32 years as an Air Force wife, traveling the world and then retiring with her husband in 1974. She volunteered for the American Red Cross, Bethany Methodist in Austin, Watauga Elementary, and led daily devotionals and songs at Autumn Leaves.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lovick and Lillie Pound, by her husband, Walter, sister, Ruth Thomas, and granddaughter, Cristine Murphy Montgomery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Helen Murphy of Bastrop; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bob Burleson of Haltom City; two grandchildren, Bryan S. Murphy of Ogden, Utah and Michael R. Cote’ Jr. of Austin; great-granddaughters, Chasity Pacheco and Madeline Murphy, step great-grandson, Jory Pacheco, and step great-great-grandson, Jory John Pacheco, all of Ogden, Utah, and great grandson Cormac Murphy Cote’-Skotak of Austin.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday evening, Jan 25th, at Weed Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar in Austin. Graveside services will be held at 10:45 am, Wednesday in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
The family would like to express many thanks to the loving staff at Autumn Leaves of Fossil Creek and the caring nurses and doctors in the ICU at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.
