She was preceded in death by her loving husband of thirty years, Robert John Hogan, their son, Robert John Hogan, Jr., her parents, John and Stella Ostenberg Burke, and her sister, Patricia.
Mary was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After graduating from Monte Cassino School for Girls, she attended Trinity College in Washington D.C. for two years. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Mary’s professional career began in Midland, Texas, as an elementary teacher. She later joined Humble Oil and Refining Company in Houston as an executive assistant before returning to teaching elementary students at St. Michael’s Catholic School in Houston.
In 1962, she married Robert John Hogan. They had one son, Robbie, and two daughters, Marcy and Lea. A Houston resident for more than 50 years, Mary was a long-time member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church community. She served in numerous capacities in the Charity Guild for Catholic Women, including president. Among the many organizations that Mary actively supported were the Junior League of Houston, the Pi Beta Phi Houston Alumnae Club, the Brown Thumb Garden Club, and the Houston Country Club.
Mary was a very special lady to all who knew her—a devoted wife, a loving mother and daughter, and a wonderful friend to many. Her daughters and granddaughters have been the beneficiaries of her strong spirit and zest for life. Her friends knew endless conversations and boundless laughter. Mary never met a stranger—she found common interests and had enjoyable conversations with everyone she met. Her smile brightened our days.
She is survived by daughter, Marcy Hogan Greer, son-in-law, Sam, granddaughters, Jenny, Julia, and Delia, of Austin, Texas; and daughter Margaret Lea Gardin, son-in-law, Murray, and granddaughter, Melanie, of Calgary, Alberta.
The family wishes to thank Laura Eisenberg, Sherry Key, Cristina Lynch, Marcella Briseno, and all the wonderful staff at the Querencia for helping make the last two years as special and comfortable as possible.
