Mary Jean “Sug” Stephens Cullen was born on Christmas Day, 1934 in St. Louis, MO. She is the baby of the family, she has two older sisters and an older brother. Jean passed from this life into the arms of the Lord on July 28, 2023 in Austin, TX.
Jean graduated from St. Marks High School in 1952 in St. Louis, MO. and then attended business school. She also worked as the secretary to the President of RxAll Drugs.
Jean married Ed Cullen on April 14, 1956 in St. Louis, MO. She traveled the world as an Air Force wife and had 7 children in 7 different cities: Big Spring, TX, Malden, MO., Universal City, TX., Phoenix, AZ., Hahn AB, Germany, St. Louis, MO., and Las Vegas, NV. The family moved to Austin, TX in 1972 where Ed was stationed, and ultimately retired, from Bergstrom Air Force Base.
When the last child went off to school, she worked at the Texas Railroad Commission for seven years. Jean’s devotion to the Roman Catholic Church has always been the center of her life. Jean is a big proponent of the Right to Life. She was the devoted treasurer for Texas Alliance for Life (TAL), formerly known as Greater Austin Right to Life (GARTL), for 17 years. In lieu of flowers, a donation to her favorite pro-life organization (TAL) would be appreciated.
Her many hobbies included: sewing, bowling league, teaching religious education, dancing: tap and ballet, and listening to good music. She loved the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Longhorns…..specifically baseball.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ed Cullen; parents, Joseph and Helen Stephens; and her two sisters, Dorothy O’Leary and Bette Burns.
Surviving her are her brother, Bob Stephens (Anne) of Chesterfield, MO.; and her three sons, Dan (Diana) of New Braunfels; Michael (Stacey) of Buda; Matt (Julie) of Buda; and four daughters, Diane (Steven) of Lakeway; Donna (Joe) of Cedar Park; Cathie (Shaun) of Pflugerville; and Sharon of Austin. Also survived by 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She taught all of her children and grandchildren to love ice cream. Her favorite treat.
The family would like to thank Watermark Memory Care at Southpark Meadows and Amedisys Hospice for their excellent care of our sweet Mother.
