Martha Crockett

Martha Hellen Sanders Crockett, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and neighbor passed away peacefully at home from lung cancer at the age of 87 on Thursday, March 29th, 2012.

Born in Brazos, Texas on October, 7, 1924, Martha grew up in Joinerville, the youngest of the seven children of Joseph and Jobie Anna Sanders. She attended Gaston Junior and Senior High Schools in Joinerville, before attending and graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.B.A. degree.

In 1943 she met fellow accounting classmate Moton H. Crockett, Jr. and at age nineteen they were married in the First Southern Presbyterian Church on March 17, 1944. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to England, Scotland, Europe, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and China as well as extensively throughout the U.S. Martha and her husband celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary by going out to dinner with two close friends less than two weeks before her passing.

Martha is survived by her husband, Moton H. Crockett, Jr., son Moton H. Crockett III, daughter Helen Elaine Crockett, granddaughter, Ingrid Burton and husband John T. Burton, Jr. and Great Grandson Ian Mackie Burton of Austin, sisters Louise Davis and Agnes Ellsworth of Dallas, sister in law Dorothy "Pinky" Sanders Harrison of Austin and many nieces and nephews. Martha is preceded in death by her brothers, Martin, Robert and Joseph and her sister, Elizabeth Moser of Longview, Texas.

Martha was active in The American Association of University Women, The United Fund of Austin, the Brownies and the Webelos Cub Scout programs. She had many friends of all ages and was active throughout her life. She had a 40 year association with her tennis group of friends, playing regularly until macular degeneration prevented her from doing so at age 64. She remained an active member of the group and attended their most recent event last month. Despite being legally blind, she was a member of her bowling team for over 35 years and competed in league play until two years ago. She also enjoyed playing bridge, hosting her weekly Thursday game with friends only a week before her passing. Martha dealt with cancer as she dealt with life; directly and gracefully. She will be missed.

Visitation at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home will be Friday, April 6th, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. A private burial service will be held for her on Saturday morning in the Oakwood Cemetery Annex. At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 7th, 2012 a memorial service celebrating her life will be held in the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas 78705.
