Mark was born on October 21, 1949 in Gifford, Illinois into a large family of German Descent. He graduated for Rantoul Township High School and went on to attend Western Illinois University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree. The family has many of Mark’s beautiful paintings in our homes. Mark grew up in the cornfield of Illinois and had many wonderful stories of his youth with friends and family. Mark was an avid baseball player throughout his youth. He was the pitcher of a continuously winning team with his brother Steve as his catcher. His summer job was picking corn for the German farmers who would bring them butter sandwiches and warm beer for lunch.
After graduating from college, Mark ventured to Dallas, Texas where he landed his first job in the design showroom of William Q. Smith. There he gained his love for custom furniture and furniture design and found a way to make a career with his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree. After a few years, Mark started his own Custom Furniture Company, InterSource, Inc. The company was immediately successful and became a dominant player in furniture design and manufacturing for hotels, country clubs and corporations around the world. Many of the finest hotels and country clubs of the era that you probably visited were filled with Mark’s designs as InterSource, Inc.
As faith would have it, one morning in 1982, the day Mark described that changed his life came. Mark met Ginger Hamblen, a designer at the time, who came in to his showroom to order furniture for a medical installation she was designing. Mark and Ginger met, fell in love and began a 40 year marriage. Mark embraced Ginger’s two children, Kris and Carlisle and raised them as his own. He was devoted to Carlisle and Kris, coached all of their teams, and was front and center in their lives to the day of his death. Mark and Ginger have a daughter together, Katie who is a light in his life.
Mark was an avid golfer and had 4 hole-in-ones during his golfing years. He cherished his golfing friends throughout his life. Mark was a kind and devoted friend to all whom he met. The funny and lifelong stories between “Boomer” and his friends will be told for many years. In Austin, Mark was honored to be a member of the Greyhound Golf Group at Barton Creek Country Club. Prior to moving to Austin in 1999, Mark was a member of Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas where he was a member of the Board for years.
Mark was a man of integrity, responsibility, and honor. His friends knew of the importance they had in his life. Most important to Mark was his family. He taught by example how to truly lead a family. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved Big and kept everyone in stitches. He lit up every room that he walked in to.
