Our dear sweet Mother passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her children Susan Davis Leander TX, Patricia Petersen Leander TX, Janet Goldsbury (Tony) Eugene OR, Sally Gorbet (Gerald) Sawyer MN, Steve Sanders Leander TX, Scott Sanders Leander TX on Sunday, October 13, 2019. She had 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Predeceased by first husband Ellis L Sanders (40 yrs) and William H Spofford Sr (22 yrs). She was a graduate of North High School, Wichita KS. She will be sorely missed by all of us and we will hold her tightly in our hearts forever.
Marilyn was born and raised in Wichita KS to Dorothy and Homer Garrison along with five brothers and four sisters. She graduated from North High in 1951. Marilyn was always the joyful, nurturing caregiver in her family and every time a birthday rolled around it was Marilyn who played the piano and led the singing.
It was in Wichita that Marilyn met a handsome young Airman, Ellis L (Sandy) Sanders, was married and had two baby girls – Susan and Pat. The family transferred to West Lynn, England and were blessed with two more daughters – Janet and Sally. The family was next stationed in Shreveport LA where sons Steve and Scott were born. The family then moved to Sault Ste. Marie MI and finally Ft. Worth TX.
Marilyn was always active in community service, President of PTA, President of Non-Commissioned Officers Club, Den Mother for Boy Scouts, was a Life member of Daughter of the Union Veterans serving in many capacities including Oregon State Dept. President for many years. Marilyn founded a morning coffee group of seniors in her HOA and attended the Good News United Methodist Church and participated in their Womens Life Group and monthly book club.
Marilyn was a loyal and devoted wife sharing 40 years of marriage with Sandy until his death in 1992. She met Bill Spofford in a grief support group they attended after he lost his first wife, became fast friends and eventually married Bill in 1995 enjoying 22 years of marriage before Bill’s death in 2017. Bill and Marilyn enjoyed traveling the US in their motorhome, connecting with family and supporting Bill’s Natures Jewelry business before relocating to Leander TX in 2008.
A Celebration of her Life Service will be held for Marilyn Spofford on Sat. October 26th 1 pm at Good News United Methodist Church, 1601 E New Hope Dr, Leander, TX 78641. Cards or flowers can be sent to 1400 Shamitas Court, Leander TX 78641. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of Marilyn Spofford.
