Marilyn Virginia Steele Barnett was born in Llano, Texas on December 18, 1934. She graduated from W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi in 1952, and attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was very active in several clubs and organizations, including being a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority as well as a Texas Sweetheart.
She met Tom Barnett in her senior year of college while Tom was an intern at Brackenridge Hospital. Marilyn graduated from UT with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1956. She taught school in Dallas for several years yet still considered Austin her principal home and maintained contact with Tom Barnett. What started out as friendship turned to love and Dr. Thomas Barnett and Marilyn Steele were married in Austin in 1962.
Dr. Barnett started his Medical practice in Round Rock, Texas and together they founded Colonial Acres Nursing Home. Marilyn became the administrator of Colonial Acres thereafter and ran a successful business until 1982 when the property was redeveloped. Dr. Barnett and Marilyn shared a strong marriage for 39 years, until Tom passed away in 2002.
Marilyn was a great wife and mother to two boys. She loved her involvement with Tri Delt and also was an avid gardener. On Saturdays in the fall she always was a fan of The University of Texas football.
She is preceded in death by her oldest son Thomas Gregory Barnett and by her husband, Dr. Thomas Barnett. She is survived by her son Jeffrey Barnett, daughter in law Juli Barnett, and grandchildren Jeffrey Barnett Jr and Jessica Barnett. She is also survived by her sister Dottie Ellis of Tyler, Texas, and brother Charles Steele and wife Kathy of Bertram, Texas. Additionally, she is survived by numerous nephews and nieces. A funeral service for Marilyn will be held Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas 78731, followed by a committal service at Austin Memorial Park.
