Marie James, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, January 14, 2010 in Austin, Texas. Marie was born on October 11, 1924, in Sinton, Texas to T.M. and Mattie Lee Gannaway. The family later moved to Corpus Christi, where Marie graduated from Corpus Christi High School. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton, Texas, where, she met her future husband, Louis. They were married on August 8th, 1943, in Corpus Christi. They had one daughter, Carol Ann. Marie graduated from Mary Hardin Baylor, and taught for several years in Belton before moving with her family to Austin, where she continued teaching until her retirement. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of women educators. Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, T.M. Gannaway, Jr. She is survived by: her husband of sixty-six years, Louis; her daughter, Carol Plassmann and her husband Charles; her grandson, John Champion and his wife, Allison, of Friendswood, Texas; her granddaughter Elizabeth Plassmann of Savannah, Georgia; and her two great grandsons, Will and Christopher Champion. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Pat Gannaway, and her nephew, Craig Gannaway, of Manson, Washington. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kindness and care provided to Marie in her later years by: the Westminster Manor staff; her Medical Team caregivers, especially Leora March; her physician, Dr. Pellegrini; and the Heart to Heart Hospice Service staff. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 23, 2010, in the chapel at Westminster Manor (4100 Jackson Avenue, Austin). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (PO Box 4464, Houston, TX, 77210-4464). A private burial service will be held at a later date.
