Marie Davis Hernandez, age 88, passed away on January 31, 2018. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Fidel S. Hernandez, and their four children: son Fidel G. Hernandez, companion Brook Brown, grandchildren James M. Hernandez, Jennifer M. Bluerock and Janeese M. Krueger; daughter Katherine A. Bell, spouse Dick and granddaughter Kelby R. Pfeiffer; daughter Dorothy M. Frasch, spouse Jay and grandchildren Kyle D. Frasch and Michelle D. Frasch; daughter Patricia G. Vogel, spouse Jerry and grandsons Connor J. Vogel and Sumner J. Vogel; 12 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She also leaves behind an extensive extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Lily Romero and McKinley Davis, her sister Susanna Resendez and her brother John Cantu.
Marie was born in San Antonio on September 13, 1929, to Lily Romero and McKinley Davis. She attended Austin public schools and graduated from Austin High School. She met Fidel, her future husband, as they grew up together in their central Austin neighborhood. They married on July 10, 1948, after his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, beginning their 69 years of marriage.
Marie was not only wife and mother, she also had an extensive career in nursing, serving for many years as medical assistant to long-time Austin physician Dr. Walter E. Sjoberg. She loved her patients and loved being of help to them. She and Fidel enjoyed many years of work and play with the Sjobergs. She and Fidel also enjoyed traveling to South Texas for Charro days, attending Longhorn football games, including the annual UT/OU game for many years. In their later years, Marie and Fidel enjoyed buying and selling imports, operating in partnership with friends from Minnesota to sell at trade fairs in the northern lakes area.
Although raised during the depression, with limited means, Marie became the consummate Do-It-Yourself-er before DIY was cool. Marie was an avid cook, talented gardener and florist, accomplished seamstress and furniture refinisher, ever-gracious hostess and one-woman neighborhood welcome wagon. She loved travel, modern art, and volunteering at her church bazaars. She lost no opportunity to bring her family, friends and extensive extended family together for any occasion, large or small, or to share a laugh with a friend. All of her family counted on her for good advice on any topic – food, decorating, health, life in general --- and sought her company to share a margarita, beer or laugh. Her tamales, gorditas, and bunuelos were the best. She will be dearly missed.
A visitation/rosary will be held at Cook Walden on 6100 North Lamar Blvd, on Friday, February 16, 2018, from 5:00-7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 2:00pm, at Sacred Heart Parish, 5909 Reicher Drive. Marie’s grandsons will serve as her pallbearers. Procession and interment of ashes will immediately follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 IH 35, Pflugerville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Parish or to the Dementia Society of America. The family wishes to thank the staff at Hearthstone Senior Center for the excellent care given to Marie.
