Maria Antonia Cortez, age 90, of Austin, Texas passed away Friday, February 26, 2016. She was born on Sunday, May 10, 1925, to Jesus and Ramona Aldaco in Creedmoor, Texas. She married Gerardo Cortez on April 30, 1948.
G-MAC, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, was a loving and supportive mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family.
She had many talents including gardening, sewing, embroidering, crocheting, and quilting. She hand stitched quilts for each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Maria retired from the University of Texas at Austin where she was Head Cook at Kinsolving Dormitory.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gerardo Cortez, and son Pedro Cortez. Maria is survived by her daughters Anita C. Moreno (Manuel), Magdalena Cortez, Rosita Cortez; son, Ramon Cortez; and brothers Jose M. Aldaco, Bonifacio Aldaco, Feliciano Aldaco, and sister Gertrudes Dougherty. She is survived by five grandchildren Manuel Moreno, Jr., Andrew Moreno (Claudia), Julius Cortez, Alma Cortez-Jackson (Darrin), Katarina Cortez and four great-grandchildren Nicholas Cortez, Eli Cortez-Jackson, Andrew P. Moreno, and Luna Cortez-Jackson.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at Dolores Catholic Church, 1111 Montopolis Drive, Austin, Texas 78741. Celebrant will be Reverend Fr. Alberto Borruel. Pallbearers will be Manuel Moreno, Jr., Andrew Moreno, Julius Cortez, Alma Cortez-Jackson, Katarina Cortez, and Frank Almaguer. Her great-grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow at Onion Creek Memorial Park, 11610 Chapel Lane, Austin, Texas 78748.
