On March 7th, 2023, Maria Salome Rosalez Alcalá, age 93, peacefully passed from this earth and into eternal heaven to be with the Lord. Among many loved ones, she is reunited with her husband of sixty-eight years, Paul Alcalá, her daughter Susan Barrera and her late parents and siblings.
Maria was born on October 22nd, 1929 in a home on the eastside of Austin to Maria and Guadalupe Rosalez. Austin remained her home for the entirety of her life and it is where she met Paul and raised their family.
Her faith and belief in the Lord was unwavering as she was an active member of her church and would often travel with Paul to the Basilica of San Juan del Valle in San Juan, TX for worship. Maria had a servant’s heart, putting the needs of others before her own. She loved to cook for her family and welcomed anyone into her home with kindness and warmth. She took great pride in her family and pictures of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were on display all throughout the house for anyone who entered to see. She found joy in sewing and gardening in her yard, often sharing the experience with her grandchildren when they visited.
On July 20th, 1951, Maria married her soulmate and they remained together until Paul’s passing in 2019. Their faith and love for their family was the bedrock of their marriage. Paul and Maria loved to dance into the night together, and after four years apart, they can begin their dance again.
Maria’s departure will leave an emptiness in the hearts of many, most especially her surviving children; Rosemary Alcalá Vaughan, Leonard Alcalá and Rene Alcalá; her eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and countless other family members and friends whose lives she touched throughout the years. Pallbearers will be Rene Alcalá, Nicholas Alcalá, Michael Barrera, Gabriel Barrera, John Thompson, Miguel Orta, Adam Alcalá and Nathaniel Rosalez.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 10th from 4-8 PM with a rosary service beginning at 7 PM at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home South, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704.
The procession will start from Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home South at 10 AM on Saturday, March 11th and travel to the Holy Family American Catholic Church, 9322 FM 812, Austin, TX 78719 where mass will begin at 11 AM. Maria will be buried at the Assumption Cemetery, 3650 South IH 35 Frontage Road, Austin, TX 78704 followed by a reception to celebrate her life at the Holy Family American Catholic Church.
