Mari Carpenter was born May 19, 1952 in Colby, Kansas. She was the oldest of six children and graduated Colby High School in 1970. She married Don Nye and earned her Physical Therapy degree from the University of Kansas.
Her daughter, Tara, was born in 1971 and her son, Donovan, was born in 1976. The family moved to Houston in 1981 and Mari continued to work as a physical therapist for more than 30 years. She was very active in her church and busy with her children’s activities.
Mari married Thomas Wylie in 1994 and they continued to live in Houston until 2010. They constructed a straw bale sustainable home in Austin, TX and she continued to live in Austin until her death.
Mari was a giver to others and shared her love with everyone she met. She was deeply spiritual and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was passionate about supporting the vulnerable and providing her services to organizations and churches dedicated to helping those in need.
Mari loved her grandchildren as much as any children can be loved. She attended all their school and sports events, and loved to make them her famous pancakes.
Mari is survived by her husband, Thomas Wylie, her mother Bessie Carpenter; her daughter Tara Huntress and husband Granger; her son Donovan Nye and wife Katie; and her three grandchildren Kepler and Colby Huntress and Esther Mae Nye. She is also survived by her five sisters and brothers, Jeanie Willoughby and husband KR; Susan Carpenter and husband Mark Schnug; Nancy Flax and husband Richard; John Carpenter and Jerry Carpenter and wife Tina.
Mari’s service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 11am at Crestview United Methodist Church in Austin, TX.
