

Margery Janet Mendelson, age 96, passed away at her home on May 31, 2017. She was born on March 2, 1921 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Harry Rosen and Rose Toffler Rosen. She attended the University of Missouri and obtained her degree from its journalism school. At Mizzou, she joined the Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority and would remain active on a local and national level throughout her entire life.
While at the University of Missouri, she met Wallace Mendelson, whom she married in Eagle Pass, Texas in 1942. Together they had three children, Wallace Brand, Bruce Howard, and Roger Hugh. The family moved to Austin in 1957 when Wallace Mendelson accepted a position as a professor in the government department at the University of Texas. In Austin, Margery became involved in the life of Congregation Beth Israel, and it remained close to her heart for the rest of her life.
Margery was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Anne Louise Savesky of Marion, Indiana, and her two sons Bruce Howard and Dr. Roger Mendelson. She is survived by her son, Dr. Wallace Brand Mendelson and his wife, Miho, of Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as her daughter-in-law, Shirley Mendelson, and her grandson, Benjamin Wallace Mendelson. She is also survived by her nephews Bob and Jim Savesky and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Congregation Beth Israel, located at 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd. on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2:00 PM.
