Margarita Rodríguez passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 5, 2023 in Austin, Texas at the age of 99. Margarita was born on October 25, 1923 in Llano del Nance, Atalaya District, Santiago de Veraguas Province, Panama, where many of her early years were spent on the ranch of her beloved grandparents. In her twenties, Margarita moved to Panama City, Panama; she worked as a housekeeper, and soon saved enough money to build a house on land she purchased for herself and her family. In 1960 she met and married Vicente Moreno.
She first visited the United States in 1975 to visit her eldest daughter and help care for her grandchildren. In 1998 she was proud to be naturalized as a U.S. citizen.
After Margarita retired she attended many senior classes at Zaragoza Recreation Center in Austin, and worked hard to improve her command of English. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. She was a wonderful cook, and her children, family and friends will miss her delicious arroz con pollo, patacones and ropa vieja. Most importantly, Margarita was a wonderful mother, grandmother and aunt, well-loved for her sharp sense of humor and her generosity.
Margarita Rodríguez is survived by her daughter Doris Chérigo, Austin, TX; her grandchildren: Will Everett, Ramón Everett, José Antonio Bermúdez; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Margarita Rodríguez is predeceased her husband, Vicente Moreno, her daughter, Judith Everett, her son, Fernando (Toto) Jiménez, her parents, Fernando Navarro and Juliana Rodríguez, brother, Juan Manuel Rodríguez, and grandparents Encarnación and Catalino Navarro.
