Margaret Edith Youngquist Roehrig, known to many as Meg, passed away September 27, 2022, at age 88, just days after suffering a stroke. Born on May 2, 1934, in the sparsely populated community of Lund, Texas, her parents were Margaret Kuehne Youngquist and Carl Andrew Elmer Youngquist. She was delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Henry Kuehne, who was the sole general practitioner for the rural community.
Margaret attended Coupland School, and then Austin schools, John B. Wynn Elementary, Pease Elementary, Allan Junior High, and Austin High. She graduated from Austin High in 1951, and attended the University of Texas at Austin that fall.
During what would become her only year at UT, she met Herbert W. Roehrig, of Staten Island, New York, and after a brief courtship, they married in December, 1952. The couple lived briefly in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then several years on Staten Island. During the time in New York, Margaret worked in the Wall Street area of Manhattan.
A son, John Robert “Jack” Roehrig was born on Staten Island in 1957. The family moved to Texas in 1960, and another son, Thomas Gerhardt “Tom” Roehrig was born in Austin. The family moved to Houston shortly after, as Herb started his career job at Texas Instruments.
Margaret returned to work in 1978 at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She retired in 1990. Herb passed away unexpectedly in 1995, and one year later Margaret moved to Austin.
During her Austin years, Margaret spent her time having her house remodeled, landscaping her garden, traveling, painting, studying Italian, and continuing her lifelong devotion to reading.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herb, brother, Girdner Alan “Gay” Youngquist, sister, Florence Garcia, and niece, Sarah Hennig. Survivors include son Jack and his wife Barbara of Fairview, Texas, and son Tom and his wife Laurie of Buda, Texas; five grandchildren, Andrea Ellison, Elyse Hall, Brennan Reed, Christina Roehrig and Luke Roehrig; three great-grandsons, Cason Reed, Dylan Reed, and Brooks Hall; sister-in-law, Margaret Richardson, niece, Suzanna Caballero, and Florence’s children Kathryn, Christopher and Allan. She also leaves behind several cousins and many friends.
