Margie Wilkerson was born on April 26, 1935 at the original St. David's Hospital in Austin, Texas. She was the first child of Julia Drake and Dr. Truman Nicholas Morris. Dr. Morris was an obstetrician who served the people of Austin for decades, helping to deliver thousands of babies. He was declared essential to the area during the Second World War. Her mother's family, the Drakes, founded Calcasieu Lumber Company which contributed two mayors to the city of Austin.
She was proud to be a charter student of Saint Stephen's Episcopal School and graduated from there in 1953. She went on to major in music and graduate with a BS from the University of Texas at Austin.
Margie later moved to Houston with her husband John H. Wilkerson and raised her family there. She was an active parishioner at Saint Martin's Episcopal Church of Houston serving for many years on the Altar Guild. She was also a proud member of the Order of the Daughters of the King.
Margie enjoyed reading, sports, and was a lifelong exercise enthusiast. She loved her family, adored her many cats and dogs all through her life and had a great compassion for animals.
She is preceded in death by her parents Dr. Truman Nicholas and Julia Drake Morris. She is survived by her sons John Hamilton Wilkerson Jr., Edward Morris Wilkerson and his wife Biricim, and grandchildren John Hamilton Wilkerson III and Mary Suna Wilkerson. She is also survived by sisters Mary Morris Hornsby, Judy Morris Covert and her husband Danay, brother Truman Nicholas "Nick" Morris Jr. and his wife Molly, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts may be made to the SPCA, St. David's Episcopal Church, The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, or a charity of your choice.
Services will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 11 at 2:00PM with interment following at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
