Manny, son of Humberto and Anita Pena Garcia, was born on March 14, 1951 in San Antonio, TX. He grew up in west Texas, outside of Lamesa, moving with his family back to San Antonio in 1966. He graduated from Luther Burbank High School in 1969.
Manny enlisted in the Army in 1969, wanting only to be a paratrooper. He served in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Bridgade from 1970 to 1971 and was awarded the Bronze Star. Other airborne assignments included the 1st BN 509th Infantry in Italy and the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg, NC. He remained on active duty until October 1992, retiring as a First Sergeant after 23 years and 23 days.
Manny was married to his best friend Mary Joan Sandman on June 3, 1977 in Elk Point, South Dakota. They were married 40 years.
After his retirement from the Army, Manny went on to earn a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Social Work from Southwest Texas State University and spent the last 18 years as a Victim Witness Counselor in the Travis County District Attorney's office.
He is survived by his wife Mary, two sons, Miguel Garcia and Daniel (Mimi) Garcia, and two grandchildren Aiden and Cora Quinne Garcia. He is also survived by his mother Anita Garcia, sister Rosa Garcia (Bill) Gusman and brother Joe Garcia. He was predeceased by his father and infant sister.
The family wishes to thank the Cancer Care clinic and oncology staff at St David's South Medical Center for their professionalism and support.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. A reception will follow. Burial will be held at a later date at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery.
