Mabel Pitts Moore died on March 10, 2007 at the age of 91. Mabel was born Henre Mabel Barfoot on October 21, 1915, in Ingleside, Texas to Henry Franklin and Mable June Irons Barfoot. After graduation from Aransas Pass High School, she attended Mary-Hardin Baylor College in Belton, Texas. After graduation she met and married Thurmond Bishop Pitts and resided in Dallas until the start of World War II. While her husband was in the Navy, she attended the University of Michigan, where she received her Master of Arts in Child Development. She then completed further graduate study at the Merrill Palmer Institute for Child Development. Afterwards she moved to Austin where she lived for all but the last two months of her life. Mabels professional career included three years of college teaching and twenty years as Laboratory Director and Child Development Specialist for the Austin Independent School District. She finished her career as the Administrator for Day Care and Child Development at the State Department of Human Services. Mabel was Founder and President of the Austin Association for the Education of Young Children. She was a member of the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children, the Council on Early Childhood Education, and the Southern Association for Children Under Six. She contributed regularly to religious, political, and community activities. She was President of the Epsilon Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and was active in the American Heart Association educational preschool program and the early National Wildflower Research Center project. She received many honors, recognitions, fellowships, scholarships, honorary memberships, citations, and awards, including nomination to the Governors Hall of Fame. She was an ardent grandmother as well. Mabel was preceded in death by her first husband, Bishop Pitts, and her second husband, George W. Moore, Jr. She is survived by her son Jon T. Pitts, daughter-in-law Karen OConnor Pitts, and granddaughter Jane Karen Pitts. Services will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd, with Rev. Ann Beaty officiating.
