Lyle Vernon Blackwood, Sr., died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 85 years of age. He was born to Charles B. and Dorothy N. Blackwood in San Antonio, TX, the second of three children.
Lyle was raised in San Antonio, TX and graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1946. He attended Baylor University on a football scholarship and received his Bachelors degree of Business Administration. He played running back for the Bears and played on the 1949 Dixie Bowl champion team. While attending Baylor, he met Jewel Mullins. They were married July 2, 1950. They later moved to San Antonio, TX where they raised their four children.
Lyle and Jewel moved to Austin in 1982 where they owned and operated the Austin Popeye's Fried Chicken franchise until they retired in 1996. In addition, he served his country for 11 years as a Captain in the National Guard.
Lyle was committed to his faith in Jesus Christ, to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, his family and his friends. He was a kind and gentle grandfather, a man committed to prayer and was a blessing to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
Lyle was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Jewel Mullins Blackwood; his parents; brother Charles B. Blackwood, sister Dorothy "Gal" Nunnelly; and a beloved son Charles Michael Blackwood.
He is survived by sons Lyle V. Blackwood Jr. of Dallas, TX, and Glenn A. Blackwood and wife Beth of West Palm Beach, FL.; daughter Barbara Kay Reynolds and husband Terry of Pflugerville, TX; daughter-in-law Anne Blackwood of New Orleans, LA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX. Interment will follow at Capital Park Cemetery, Pflugerville, TX. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Search Ministries, 4202 Canyonside Trail, Austin, Texas, 78731.
