Leslie "Les" Kyle Lilly was born on August 1, 1959 to Marie Dumas Lilly and Cleveland Lilly, Sr. He attended the public schools of Mount Gilead, North Carolina and graduated from West Montgomery High School in 1977. Les was a scholar and an avid basketball player. He was awarded a full athletic basketball scholarship to Pembroke College in North Carolina, where in 1981, he earned his Bachelor of Arts.
Les' passions manifested in the diverse positions he held during his professional life, including law enforcement, restaurant management, youth mentorship, and early childhood development. Most recently, Les worked with the Neighborhood Longhorns Program at The University of Texas at Austin, where he coordinated educational outreach opportunities for children in under-resourced communities.
Les was a gentle giant. At 6'4", his mere presence was commanding, yet it was rare that he spoke a harsh word or used a raised voice. Les had a dry, subtle humor. He loved to laugh and when he did it was loud and infectious.
In 1993, Leslie Kyle Lilly married Soncia Rae Reagins and to this union two children were born; Kyle Austin Lilly (1997) and Kennedy Elizabeth Lilly (2000). Les loved his wife and his children; they were his pride and joy. He had an unrelenting dedication to his family and he loved to spend time with them. He loved to cook and explore the open road with Soncia, Kyle, and Kennedy. In his spare time he'd often be found reading. Les was a life-long learner! Anyone who knew Les well was aware of his familiarity with team and player statistics; especially basketball. He often attended NFL football games throughout the country. Les loved listening to music, especially the sounds of Bobby Womack and Barry White. Unknown to many, Les was a gifted vocalist. He had a rich baritone voice, reminiscent of Barry White.
Les' love extended beyond his immediate family; he regularly "adopted" young people as his own. Due to a shared athletic experience, Les took pride in the unique relationship he shared with UT student athletes.
Les transitioned from this life on January 21, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Soncia Reagins-Lilly, Ed.D., two children: Kyle Austin Lilly and Kennedy Elizabeth Lilly. Les leaves to cherish his memory: two brothers, Cleveland L. Lilly, Jr. (Teresa) of Denver, Colorado; James E. Lilly (Velena) of Mount Gilead, North Carolina; two sisters, Maria D. Lilly and Latondra P. Williams (Gregory) of Durham, North Carolina. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Calvin Austin Dumas. Les also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A special "thank you" to the Westlake team of First Responders who immediately responded to our call and worked tirelessly during our hour of need.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017, in the Smith Chapel at Riverbend Church, 4214 N. Capital of Texas Highway, Austin, TX 78746.
