She was born in Austin on the 28th of November 1948, the second child of Jean Leslie Fiegel Siedo and Edwin Edward John Siedo. She grew up basically at 6th and Lamar, which was a neighborhood in those days. As a youth she was accomplished in both school and as a pianist. In 1967 as a senior cadet in the Travis County Composite Squadron the Civil Air Patrol, she and 3 other cadets, led by commander Captain Fred Burger, drove a mobile communications van to the Brownsville, Texas area just as Hurricane Beulah crossed into Texas. There they set up the short wave communication system that served as the only voice out of the valley to direct rescue and relief services of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station until the 8th Army arrived to take command. For that perilous service, Leo, her fellow CAP members and her squadron were awarded the second highest National Civil Air Patrol service medal.
A graduate of Austin High School, she went on to attend the University of Texas Austin. While in school there she was hired in 1966 to work part time for KUT. She stayed on at KUT after graduation and over 30 years became a manager and one of the first Assistant Directors of the station. She retired in 2001, but later decided to go back to work. Chase Bank welcomed her and she remained with them until her passing.
She is survived by her loving dog Annie, her sister Mary Frances Burger, niece Leslie Buesing, husband Brian and their children Adrian and Krystalynn, her nephew Ted Burger, and many cousins.
Leo was preceded in death by her father and her mother. In Jean’s later years, Leo had spent much of her time lovingly caring for her mother.
The family would like to thank all of the physicians that cared for her, especially Dr. Lynne Knowles, Dr, Ryan Tierney and their staff at Texas Oncology that fought so hard to save her from her rare, aggressive cancer. We would also like to thank David Lee of Runs with Dogs Pet Sitting for the care and loving he gave Annie in her absence.
Visitation will be held Friday, the 9th of September from six o’clock in the evening until eight o’clock at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd.
Services led by Rev. Doug Keenan of the First Baptist Church are scheduled for Saturday, the 10th of September one o’clock in the afternoon at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
