Laurence G. "Larry" Schmidt, Sr. was born Nov. 13, 1927, the youngest of seven children, in Anchor Township, IL. He passed from this life surrounded by his family on Friday, December 5, 2008 in Austin, TX after a lengthy illness. Larry learned a strong work ethic and good moral character early on, growing up during the Great Depression in a small farming community in Illinois. As a youth, he began a lifelong love of baseball. He later served his country in the US Army and later became a member of the VFW. He was well known in Austin as a mail carrier for many years where he served the community in east and south Austin as well as the Rollingwood area. He was a longtime and faithful member of Faith United Methodist Church. He served as a volunteer during many events, functions and activities and his outgoing personality was evident as a greeter and usher. His exuberance for life and active lifestyle reached into every part of his life. His daily walks and conversations will be missed by his many neighbors and friends over the last 45 years. His children and grandchildren will miss his big heart and enduring love. He is survived by his son, Laurence G. "Larry" Schmidt, Jr. of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Donny Smith of Cedar Creek; two grandchildren, Taylor Tushup and Sterling Smith of Cedar Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and one sister. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at Faith United Methodist Church, 2701 S. Lamar with Rev. Sheree Harris officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or to Odyssey Hospice of Austin.
