Dr. Larry Bruce Schrader peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 8, 2021, at Querencia at Barton Creek in Austin, Texas. He was surrounded by his loving family where he showed such bravery, grace, and an incredibly strong spirit as he was finally able to gaze upon the face of God.
Larry was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on December 22, 1944, where his father was working on the Manhattan Project. After the war, at the age of 4, his family moved to Longview, Texas. He graduated from Longview High School in 1962 and attended Mississippi State University and the University of North Texas, where he met his adoring wife of over 47 years whom he dutifully loved and supported until her passing on December 11, 2015.
After graduating from UNT in 1967 with a degree in biology, Larry taught high school science until being accepted into Baylor College of Dentistry (now known as Texas A&M College of Dentistry). Following receipt of his D.D.S., he was admitted to the master's program in orthodontics at St. Louis University, graduating as valedictorian in 1973. After completing the orthodontics program, Larry was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Hood as an orthodontist for two years.
Upon completion of his service in 1975, he and his family moved to Austin. There he set up his orthodontics practices in Northwest Hills and Coppers Cove and practiced for over 46 years helping his many patients achieve beautiful smiles. Larry particularly enjoyed using his skills to help those with the most challenging cases. Still, his greatest love in life was being a doting husband and proud father of three children who loved him very much, as well as an active grandfather, with his memorable Donald Duck impression. Larry was also a varsity tennis player in high school and enjoyed collecting pens, coins, and antique cameras. He also loved history and cars, including having been the proud owner of a 1982 Datsun 280ZX sports car.
For those who knew him personally, he was a friendly and easy-going soul who enjoyed the company of everyone around him. Larry went into orthodontics to help and serve others and was a valued member of the American Association of Orthodontists. He was a devoted member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin and enjoyed participating in its bible study programs. He was dearly loved, and his family and friends will miss his friendship, compassion, love, and devotion. His spirit lives on in those whose lives he touched.
Those celebrating his life are his three children, Brett Alan Schrader and his wife, Lisa of Houston; Meka Elizabeth Schrader Arend and her husband, Chris of Houston; and Erin Leann Schrader of Austin; his four grandchildren, Andrew Christopher Arend and Mackenzie Elizabeth Arend of Houston; and Laurel Elizabeth Schrader and Presley Elizabeth Schrader of Houston. Respecting his wishes, Larry was cremated and will be buried next to his wife in Graceland Cemetery in Jermyn, Texas. At his request and due to the pandemic, a memorial service is to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in his honor may donate to MDAnderson Cancer Center or the charity of their choice.
