Lakisha confessed her faith in Christ at an early age. After moving to Houston, she joined Fall Brook Church, known as “The Brook.” Her passion was ensuring that the unhoused received care packages which included blankets and socks. She had a genuine love for people. She enjoyed hearing her pastor, Pastor Mike Pender, preaching and teaching God’s word during Sunday and Wednesday services. Lakisha also enjoyed the Christmas in July gospel concerts at The Brook. She always looked forward to coming to The Mount to hear Pastor A. W. Anthony Mays, as she affectionately called her other pastor.
Lakisha attended Austin Public Schools, graduating from John H. Reagan High School in 1992. She went on to attend Prairie View A& M University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1996, as well as graduating with a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling in 1997. She received her Professional Counselor’s License from the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. Lakisha was a member of Epsilon Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society. She was a proud contributing alumna of Prairie View A&M University.
While working for Tri-County in Houston as a counselor and therapist, she opened her own private practice. At the time of her passing Lakisha was employed at Gateway Foundation/Corrections as a counselor/therapist for young at-risk males.
On October 5, 2024, Lakisha gained her wings and claimed her seat in the arms of our God. She is preceded in death by her father, Loyd Powell Sr., as well as her grandparents.
Lakisha enjoyed spending quality time with her family, her long-time love, Rodney, and especially her nieces and nephews. She also loved spending time with her fur baby, Chloe. She enjoyed living life and helping others seek a better life. She loved music, attending concerts, line dancing, and zydeco. Lakisha enjoyed traveling, going to museums, and reading (especially about history). Lakisha was a bonified FASHIONISTA; she loved shopping for clothes and especially shoes—she left a closet full, tags still intact.
Lakisha leaves to cherish her precious memory: her loving mother, Mary Lee Powell of Austin, Texas; the love of her life, Rodney Thomas of Pearland, Texas; sister, Sheila McKinney of Austin, Texas; sister, Edna Childs of Pflugerville, Texas; brother, Loyd Powell, Jr., of Austin, Texas; her fur baby, Chloe; nephews, Willie McKinney IV and Jeremy Raymond-Watson; niece, Elizabeth Childs; great-nephew, Willie McKinney V; great-niece, Skylar Watson; one aunt, Dorothy Brown of Tacoma, Washington; and a host of cousins and friends.
