Kris was born on May 3, 1969, the daughter of William and Sharon Thompson. Kris was a rising star in the Austin Police Department and a born leader during her 23 years of service. Her passing will be felt by many in the community and in her law enforcement family. Throughout her years of service, Kris was a strong advocate for improving the laws to assist those in need and maintained a heartfelt commitment to providing quality intervention services for the citizens of Austin. Most recently Kris served as a Lieutenant in the Police Technology Unit, in addition to being a valued member of the Honor Guard and Hostage Negotiation Team, two of the most honorable and critical volunteer assignments in the department. During her 15 years as a negotiator, team leader and supervisor on the Hostage Negotiation Team, Kris responded to hundreds of high profile incidents, utilizing her skills as a negotiator and leader to assist in keeping both citizens and officers safe. Lt. Thompson was also the founding member of the Central Texas Critical Incident Stress Team, which has assisted first responders following disaster and trauma over the past 22 years. Kris served as the team’s President, coordinator, cheerleader for 17 years. As a member of the Honor Guard for 20 years, Kris assisted in coordinating and managing numerous large scale events including line of duty deaths and funerals for current and retired police officers. Kris also represented the department in the highest regard at both the Texas Peace Officers Memorial and National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. For her dedication and service to the Austin community Kris has been nominated for The Distinguished Command Medal.
Kris is survived by her beloved parents, Sharon Ann and Willie Golden, William and Sharon Thompson, and her sister, Michele Thompson Bartol.
