Kenneth Rae McKee, devoted husband, loving dad, adoring Pepa, and big-hearted friend, lived a full and happy life. Ken died peacefully at home on April 26, 2018, just days after celebrating his 86th birthday, and days before his 58th wedding anniversary.
Ken loved his wife, family, and friends with a clear heart. Ken would say he’s a lucky man. Luck is defined as “a force that brings good fortune”, and Ken was luck to everyone he knew. Ken would say his luck started when he married his dear lady, Kay, the love of his life for 57 years. Married in a chapel in Las Vegas, they shared a long life of adventure, love, and commitment with their family and dear friends.
Ken brought focus, intelligence, and a positive outlook to every chapter of his life. Born in Lethbridge, Canada, Ken grew up in Utah with his coal-mining father, mother, and big brother. With a natural aptitude for numbers, he earned a degree at the University of Utah in Banking and Finance, and set off after graduation to serve as Army First Lieutenant in the Korean Conflict. Ken’s primary duty was in the DMZ as a code cracker. He applied the same keen attention and integrity to his career, and enjoyed a successful 38-year haul in the moving and storage industry.
Over the years, Ken lived in Utah, California, and New Mexico, but Texas was his true home. Ken considered his home and family life as his greatest achievement and biggest blessing. The love he shared with his wife Kay was one of joy and delight to him throughout his life. He was an involved father whose unwavering support and love for his daughters set the foundation for a generation of loving, caring and talented grandchildren who he adored.
In his post-family-raising, post-career years, Ken was anything but retiring. Ken took the time to enjoy himself and shared joy with his friends and family. He took up golf later in life and was a mean putter, but his favorite thing about any game was playing and being with people. He and Kay traveled, and made daily life playful. From his weekly, very friendly poker game, to his kitchen table, Ken had a way of warming the room with his genuine smile, gentle demeanor and quick wit. He always saw the best in everyone, listened with his heart, and never wasted a word. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
Ken leaves behind his wife, Kay, his daughter Tracee Cummins and her children, Annie and Sam, and his daughter, Lori Walker, her husband, Richard, and their two children, Claren and Natalie, and his niece and nephews, Kathy, Steve, Michael, and Thom. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Louise McKee and his brother, Thomas Lawrence McKee.
Ken will be inurned at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
