Kathryn O'Connor Counts, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and a pillar of her community passed away on October 31, 2023, surrounded by her loving husband and devoted children. She was born on October 4, 1943, in Victoria, Texas, to rancher Tom O'Connor Jr. and his wife, Junie Broussard O'Connor.
Kathryn and her husband, Dr. Donald Counts, embarked on a journey that brought them to Austin, Texas, in 1978, where together they raised their three cherished children. Kathryn and Don’s love and devotion for one another is an enduring gift and example for their children and grandchildren.
While Kathryn’s priority was always her family, she was able to share her talents, interests, and passions with others in her community. Kathryn was an avid reader with an insatiable curiosity for history. She shared her passion with the world by serving on the Board of the Texas Book Festival, founded by former First Lady Laura Bush. She fervently supported the literary community and believed in the power of books to inspire and connect people.
Kathryn’s love for art and music was another defining aspect of her life. Kathryn was a dedicated member of the Board of Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas, where she contributed to the growth and appreciation of the arts in her community. She and her husband were also long-time season ticket holders of Austin City Limits and enjoyed the live tapings of renowned musicians, creating lasting memories together.
Kathryn was a faithful steward and lover of the land, finding quiet solace and vibrant joy on her ranch. She had a passion for quail hunting and was delighted to watch her canine companions on point, embracing the natural beauty and adventure the outdoors provided. Whether at the ranch or her home in Austin, it was evident to all who knew her that her love for her family’s togetherness was unparalleled. Kathryn's heart was at its fullest when hosting major holidays, where she created a warm and welcoming space for her loved ones to gather. Her sense of humor remained steadfast, bringing laughter and joy to all fortunate enough to share in her company, even until the end.
Kathryn O'Connor Counts is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Donald Counts, and their three devoted children: Junie Meskey (John), Ralph Gilster III (Sara), Kate Dunnam (Russell), and her sister, Louise O’Connor. Kathryn was a proud and doting grandmother to eight grandchildren: Nell Caffey (Matt) and Connor Johnstone; Samantha, Tom, Ralph William, and Andrew Gilster; and Carlisle and Bridey Dunnam.
Kathryn's life was a testament to the enduring and everlasting power of family, the pursuit of knowledge, and a deep appreciation for the arts. Kathryn’s spirit lives on, and her influence will be felt for years to come. Her family will carry forward the traditions, lessons, and love she generously shared. As they honor her memory, her impact on their hearts and the world will remain a testament to the extraordinary woman she was.
Kathryn’s family would like to extend deep gratitude to the many who helped care for her these last few years. Of particular mention, the family would like to thank her Dr(s).: David Huston, Michael Trotter, Celina Mankey, and Elisabeth Peckham. In addition, several other people were integral in Kathryn’s comfort and care: Lisa Rodriguez, Joani Mendoza, Barbara Spiller, Monique Limon, Lorena Ranno, Leia Payne, Ellie Mendoza, Karen Kniffen, and Helen Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Kathryn’s honor to one of her most treasured charities: The Central Texas Food Bank (6500 Montopolis Drive, Austin, Texas 78744); The Dorothy O’Connor Pet Adoption Center (135 Progress Drive, Victoria, Texas 77905); or The Salvation Army (Austin Metropolitan Area Command, 4700 Manor Road, Austin, Texas 78723).
There will be a private family burial at St. Dennis Church, O’Connor River Ranch. There will be a gathering for family and friends on Wednesday, November 8th, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
