Juliet Mathis was born in Austin, Texas, the eldest daughter of Dr. Edgar G. Mathis and Bess Caperton Mathis. She passed away on Friday night, March 5, 2010 at the age of 91. While Julie had no children of her own she was like a second mother to many. She had a profound and positive influence on all of her 13 nieces and nephews, and on those to whom she taught art at O'Henry Junior High for approximately 35 years. She shared her love of food, art, and UT football with the family and friends who lived in and visited Austin, especially all of those who attended the University through the years. Julie was a faithful member of University Presbyterian Church and will be remembered for her love of travel and the beautiful works of art she created. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edgar Mathis, Jr., and her nephew, Tom Mathis. Those who have survived her are her brothers, Tom and Harry Mathis, her sister, Betty McCallick, her nieces and nephews, Sue Phagan, Sonny Mathis, Carol Blount, Mike Brannen, David Mathis, Julia Hollocher, Jan Van Oonk, David Brannen, Nancy Jewett, Brooke Crawley, Tommy Mathis and Brent McCallick, as well as many wonderful great-nieces and nephews, who will miss her greatly. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the old section of Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Texas.
