Julia Looper Rex Julia Looper Rex (Julie), beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2005. She was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on February 25, 1924, the daughter of Harry Stuart and Inez Ellard Looper, and grew up in Dalton, Georgia, the Carpet Capital of the World, along with her only sibling, Harry Stuart, II. Julia graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she met Eugene Braid Rex, a cadet at the nearby Wentworth Military Academy. The couple married in 1945 at the Rex family cabin in South Fork, Colorado, after Lieutenant Rex served in the United States Army. In 1947, Julie received her B.S. in Elementary Education from the Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. Julie taught in the Denver School District, then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and Baltimore, Maryland, as her husband attended college and medical school. She assisted Dr. Rex in his suburban Philadelphia medical practice until the births of their two children. Julie was an accomplished harpist who performed at church concerts and school functions. As a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), she was a great patriot. In her later years, Julie became an avid bridge player until poor eyesight forced her to give up her favorite game within a few points of achieving the coveted Masters ranking. Julie was an enthusiastic, joyful woman whose credo was, Live each day gloriously. Cats were her passion; one of the Rex familys many animals, Diamond, won the Best Family Pet award from the Morris of America Cat Contest in Philadelphia. Julie will be sorely missed by all those who knew her, especially her spouse of 60 years, Dr. Eugene Rex; son Brad Rex and wife Nancy and grandchildren James, Monica, and Natalie Rex; and daughter Braiden Rex-Johnson and husband Spencer Johnson. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Julies name be made to the John Looper Speech & Hearing Center, 1011 Professional Blvd., Dalton, Georgia, 30720, (706) 226-4623. Condolence messages may be sent to Braiden Rex-Johnson, 98 Union Street, Suite 1009, Seattle, Washington, 98101. A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. Arrangements by Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress, Austin, TX 512/442-1446. You may view memorials at www.wcfish.com.
