Julia Idonis Lancaster Juhl, 91, in Austin, Texas, passed away on August 25, 2016. She was a gifted seamstress, prize winning quilter, baker of taste sensations, voracious reader and crafter who filled her home with objects both elegant and useful. Her creative abilities were astounding. Her eye for color impressive. Her stitching expert.
Raised in rural Tennessee, Julia was the only one of her six siblings to graduate high school. She played basketball and helped on the farm. With her best friend, Rena, she moved to Chicago in 1945 where she dated and danced and worked in a fashion house buying buttons and zippers. In fact, she was so tall and beautiful that she often wore designer originals. She lived at the Eleanor Club in Chicago, a home for working women. They socialized with the local YMCA and there met a handsome German fellow, Nis Juhl. They were married 2 months later.
Julia was for the most part a homemaker but went back to work once her children were in junior high school. And she was a world traveler. She has seen most of Europe, Canada and Mexico. Because of this, her two daughters became world travelers, too. She taught them to love adventure and to be excited to learn new and marvelous things.
Julia is survived by her adoring husband of 63 years, Nis, and her two beloved daughters, Karen and Regina. They miss her every moment, but she leaves their hearts full with love.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 6:00 pm at Cook-Walden Chapel Of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas.
