Joyce was born in Lytle, Texas on May 17, 1923, to Lola and Robert E. Miller. She married Emmett S. Sutton on August 5, 1943, shortly before Emmett was deployed to England as a pilot in WWII. In 1950, Emmett and Joyce moved to Austin. Joyce was an accomplished pianist and organist and served as organist for St. John’s Methodist church for a short time. She began helping Emmett with his insurance agency and continued that work even beyond Emmett’s death, helping her children continue in that same business. She was an avid golfer for many years at the old Austin Country Club and then for a short time with the Austin Women’s Golf Association. Her last years were spent at Westminster Manor where she had many friends and enjoyed her volunteer jobs.
Joyce is survived by her son, Emmett S. Sutton, III and his wife, Penny and their children, Field, Conor, and Alden; daughter, Cheryl S. Stallworth and her husband, JP, and their children, Driskill and Sutton: son, Rip D. Sutton and his daughter, Shelby. Joyce’s family would like to extend our gratitude to the caring, supportive staff at Westminster Manor and to New Century Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition, on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10:00am.
