Josephine (Josie) Hernandez from Austin, Texas age 94 joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 17, 2017. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Josie was born in Austin, Texas on December 18, 1922 to Marcelino and Julia Deleon Gonzales.
Josie’s main focus of her personal life was family and friends. Josie married “The love of her life” Lawrence Hernandez and together they owned and operated Lawrence’s Superette. She always greeted their customers with a smile, and was always kind hearted and generous. Josie loved and cherished her only child, daughter Carolyn. She was passionate and proud of Carolyn and her son-in-law Rick Ragland.
Josie is survived by her daughter Carolyn (Rick) Ragland, nieces Bernice (Tony) Castillo and Linda Medrano, nephews Bennie (Sally) Ruiz, Frank (Helen) Saldana, John A. (Tuyet) Saldana and Joel Saldana and Josie’s extended Hernandez family members whom she loved dearly. Josie is preceded in death by her parents, Marcelino and Julia Gonzales, husband Lawrence Hernandez, companion Mike Garza and sisters Dora (Frank) Saldana and Susie (Bennie) Ruiz.
While growing up she was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and others. She helped out in her parent’s family restaurant business “The Tip Inn”. She was employed in the AISD Food Service Department, retiring from Blanton Elementary School in 1987. Josie enjoyed traveling and entertaining her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking for them. She was known for her delicious Thanksgiving dressing. Her house was always full of love and welcomed all with opened arms. She loved music, dancing and gathering of family and friends to create a good party. She was a very dedicated wife and mother. She always shared her happiness with others and lived her life to the fullest!
A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, March 20th in the Colonial Chapel at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, located at 6100 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas 78752. A rosary will be held the same evening at 7:00 P.M. A funeral mass will be held the following day on March 21st at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, located at 1206 E 9th St, Austin, Texas 78702. A committal service will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery located at 2800 Hancock Drive Austin, Texas 78731.
Active pallbearers will be Rodney Castillo, Derek Castillo, Frank Saldana Jr., John Albert Saldana, Bennie Ruiz, Ted Hernandez Jr., and Randy Medrano. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Castillo and Joel Saldana.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice Austin.
