Joseph Peter Lockwood passed away on April 24, 2023, after a valiant fight with cancer, at the age of 80. He was born December 27, 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas to Robert and Marcella Lockwood. He graduated from Lincoln High School, class of 1961.
After graduating from Lincoln High School, he went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly displayed the crest and internalized the mantra of “Semper Fidelis” all the days of his life. In one of his final moments, the doctor asked, “Were you a Marine sir?” He vehemently barked back, “I am a Marine!”
While in the Corps, he married Pamela Lavallais and fathered two sons, Michael and Tony. He was a passionate, reliable and loyal father to his children. He understood that raising young men required a firm hand, but enough space for them to spread their wings and fly on their own. However, when it came to his four grandchildren, “grandad,” as he was affectionately called, became a softy and believed in “greasing the palms” of the young ones. He never had less than a hundred dollar bill for each them, on every visit and every special occasion. The kids would eagerly await his visits.
He ultimately divorced, relocated to Austin, Texas, and a cowboy was born. He absolutely loved Austin’s eclectic vibe, and was rarely seen without his signature cowboy boots and a well-worn baseball cap. Occasionally cantankerous, but a consummate gentleman and the life of the party. They say friends are the family you choose. Well, he loved his Austin family and they loved him. Joe spent over 40 years working in local government, and as a dedicated and proud Teamster driver in the motion picture industry.
He spent his latter days traveling and enjoying the beaches of Mexico and South Florida. He will definitely be miss by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marcella Lockwood; and brothers Rufus Lockwood and Robert Lockwood Jr; and grandson Torran Lockwood of Port, Arthur Texas.
Left to cherish his loving memories are: sons, Michael Lockwood, of Boca Raton, FL and Tony Lockwood of Dallas, TX; daughter-in-law, Lisa Leslie Lockwood of Boca Raton, FL; granddaughters, Gabrielle Mbamala of Dallas, TX, Mikaela Hicks of Colorado Springs, CO, and Lauren Lockwood of Boca Raton, FL; grandson, Michael Lockwood II of Boca Raton, FL; great grandson, Jameson Mbamala of Dallas, TX; sisters, Helen Scott of Port Arthur, TX and Tina Joyce Desselles of Port Arthur, TX; nephews Gregory Scott of Los Angeles, CA and Avery Desselles of Little Rock, AR; nieces, Cynthia Scott of Beaumont, TX; Wanda Warren of Port Arthur, TX; Tamika Akinfolarin of Pittsburgh, PA; grand-niece, Lauren Scott of Port Arthur, TX
