When we say that, 

 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not             envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres,

We are speaking of the example Grandma set for all of us who know her. I will forever love her and miss her every day.

In Loving Memory of Johnnie Frazier Phifer

Mare and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear neighbor and friend, Johnnie Frazier Phifer. For many years, we were blessed to live next door to both Johnnie and her beloved husband, George. Their presence enriched our lives in countless ways.

I spent many hours sitting with George on the front wall between our homes, listening as he shared his memories—stories full of wisdom, humor, and quiet strength. After George passed, I did my best to be there for Johnnie, to offer comfort and a helping hand whenever possible. Her grace and resilience were a testament to her character.

Our sons were fortunate to meet George and hear his stories firsthand, an experience they still remember fondly. And we were equally blessed by the kindness and support of George and Johnnie’s sons, who were devoted to their parents and a joy to know.

Despite the many barriers that came with the pandemic, we kept in touch as best we could. And now, with Johnnie’s passing, we find ourselves reflecting on the warmth, generosity, and quiet dignity she brought to all who knew her.

On rare and special occasions, Johnnie would accept a wee dram of her favorite Glenlivet 21-year-old single malt—something we reserved just for her. There’s still a bit of that bottle left, and Mare and I will be thinking carefully about the right moment and the right way to honor our friendship and her memory with what remains.

Johnnie was a gracious soul, and our neighborhood—and our hearts—are gentler places because she was in them. She will be missed deeply and remembered always.

My father Harvey Gann served with Johnnie's husband,  George, at the Austin Police Dept.  They had a deep friendship and my mother Evelyn developed a friendship with Johnnie that lasted even beyond George's passing.   When my mother passed away March 24 I called Johnnie to let her know but I got no answer.  I learned yesterday April 11th at my mother's funeral that Johnnie had passed away soon after my mother.  My mother had told me thay she had talked to Johnnie, I believe in January,  and it comforted me to know that they had spoken.

Johnnie was a lovely neighbor and we will greatly miss chatting with her when we walk our dogs or while she was working in the yard.
